University of Florida researchers writing in the Journal of Neuroscience reveal a new drug compound currently in testing that could help repair the loss of memory function in non-Alzheimer’s older citizens. The researchers found a way to boost short-term or “working memory” by manipulating the neurotransmitter GABA. The hope is that this research leads to future therapies that could be applied to age-related cognitive decline as well as Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Reporting in the journal Rejuvenation Research, the scientists note that a mix of antioxidant-rich extracts from foods like blueberries and green tea coupled with vitamin D3 protected the cognitive processing of a group of test subjects compared to a control group.

Scientists at the National Institutes of Health have published data in Carcinogenesis revealing that the process of methylation over time in cells—a natural function of aging—could make those cells more susceptible to cancer. Upon shifting their focus to seven cancer types, the scientists found altered DNA methylation in up to 90% of cells.
