Thought Control Makes Robot Arm Grab and Move Objects

New Scientist reports that new research from the University of Pittsburgh, appearing in the Journal of Neural Engineering, has allowed a woman without control of her limbs to move a robotic arm simply by thinking about doing so. Researchers implanted electrodes in the woman’s brain, which allowed the commands of the robotic arm to be sent to a computer. An algorithm then interpreted the commands and moved the robotic arm to match the movement the patient commanded. With further research, this new robotic assistance technology could benefit those suffering from loss of limb paralysis.
