– Liwa Oasis, approximately 200km south-west of Abu Dhabi, lies on the very edge of the Empty Quarter and is one of the largest oases on the Arabian Peninsula. Not only that, it boasts what might be the world’s tallest sand dune, Tel Moreeb. Standing over 300 metres high and with a punishing 50 degree incline, it isn’t called ‘Scary Mountain’ for nothing
– The Emirates Palace launched the world’s first gold vending machine. The machine called Gold To Go is itself painted in 24-carat gold, dispenses a selection of gold in one, five and ten gram bars as well as one ounce bars.
– The world’s largest motorised model of a Willis WW2 Jeep
– Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan owns one of the world’s biggest private car collections. The exhibition contains the world’s biggest truck, a replica Dodge pick-up. Apparently large enough to land his helicopter on, this eight-times enlarged duplicate weighs in excess of 50 tonnes and has four large bedrooms.
– During the Al Ain Aerobatic show opening ceremony in 2007 three planes broke the world record for a synchronised flight display with the biggest disparity in weight. With more than 240 times weight difference, an Etihad Airbus A330-300, a Sukhoi, Su-26 and an Extra-300S flew in tight formation
– Zoltán Veres from Hungary holds the record for most consecutive rolls by an airplane. His feat clocked up 408 rolls during the Al Ain Aerobatic Show in 2007.

– Over the 2010 Christmas period guests of the Emirates Palace Hotel hosted the world’s most expensively decorated Christmas tree. In total the tree contained almost Dhs40.5 million worth of jewels and stood 13.1 metres high.
– The Emirates Palace Hotel played host to an auction which saw the sale of the world’s most expensive license plate. In 2008 the single number plate ‘1’ sold for Dhs52.2 million to Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri.

– Although the Mosque has over 80 domes the largest is thought to be the biggest mosque dome in the world measuring 32.7 metres in diameter and soaring 85 metres from top to bottom.
– The floral shaped marble mosaic in the mosque’s courtyard measures approximately 17,000 m² and is thought to be the largest marble mosaic in the world.
– The Sheikh Zayed Grand houses the largest hand-woven rug which measures 5,627m² and contains 2,268,000,000 knots
– Forget the Petronas Towers; Abu Dhabi’s Gate Towers has the highest penthouse bridge on Earth, suspended at an amazing 245 metres above ground.
– The Emirates Palace, when completed in 2005, was the world’s most expensive hotel, costing Dhs10.5billion to build.
– The iconic Capital Gate building, boasting a lean of 18° is the world’s furthest leaning man-made tower.

Dubai has rediscovered its appetite for grand designs. A replica Taj Mahal four times bigger than the original, the world’s biggest Ferris wheel, several new mega-malls, and over 100 new hotels are amongst a raft of extravagant projects aiming to boost tourism in the emirate. But lingering debt woes from its last boom-and-bust cycle should hopefully reduce the risk of runaway spending.
The strategy isn’t quite a repeat of the one that led the emirate to the verge of bankruptcy in 2009, when Dubai was left hanging by a debt-fuelled real estate bubble and a series of high-profile overseas acquisitions at aggressive valuations. The economic fundamentals have improved. While residential and commercial real-estate prices remain well below their peak, there is room for new investment in retail and tourism. Hotel occupancy rates were at 90 percent last year, says Ernst and Young. Shopping malls in central areas are packed. New Bollywood theme parks and an expansion of giant Chinese malls will support the emirate’s push to woo more visitors from Asia and further align its economy to fast growth markets to the east.
